How do you know what job to take when everything feels so uncertain?

Whenever we make a career decision, it's influenced by what we imagine the future will be like. If the future feels precarious you might seek a job that provide stability and security, even if it doesn't excite you, while a prosperous future might inspire you to chase roles that provide autonomy, mastery and purpose.

For so many of us, the extended waves of impact that COVID-19 brings has threatened the imagined future we usually default to when making these kinds of choices, and we have not yet formed a stable alternative vision of the future to measure our decision-making against.

This course began as an exercise I designed for my own use. After a decade of leading and coaching change in public health, the ambitious plans I had for 2020 were flipped on their head by the arrival of multiple high impact, high uncertainty events that required me to rapidly reorient how I was thinking about the future, and find a way to make decisions about work while holding multiple possible futures in my mind.

So how do you make decisions about major commitments, like taking on a new role, when it's hard to imagine what normal might look like in even in a few months time?

What real people are saying about this course

Shreeda Segan

AI Implementation Specialist

This course provides a rare breath of fresh air in a time of such uncertainty. It can be easy to slip into avoidance and overwhelm. The prompts in this course help you regain a sense of being in control over your fate while not dismissing the uncertainty ahead. This would be a great tool for someone looking to change roles in such a turbulent time by providing a sense of: yes, you can have it all. You can find the right job for you at this time.

Jane Louise

EA / Office Manager

This course really helps you break down what it is you want, in a format that is easy and repeatable. I'll be using this regularly from now on.

Lauren

Project Manager

This course supports, yet challenges you, to consider what you truly value in a role. Through completion of the activities I have a clearer understanding of what to look for in a future role and to determine whether it will fit with my needs.

Sharon

Registered Nurse

Committing to the course allowed me to create time for myself to explore what I valued about work and a workplace, and understanding what makes me happy and fulfilled at work. With my contract soon to finish, I am feeling much more confident in choosing what roles I will apply for next, where previously I was just looking for any vacancies and not really understanding what 'my essential ingredients' for satisfying work are.
