Changing Roles in Turbulent Times
Assessing job fit when the future feels volatile
Whenever we make a career decision, it's influenced by what we imagine the future will be like. If the future feels precarious you might seek a job that provide stability and security, even if it doesn't excite you, while a prosperous future might inspire you to chase roles that provide autonomy, mastery and purpose.
For so many of us, the extended waves of impact that COVID-19 brings has threatened the imagined future we usually default to when making these kinds of choices, and we have not yet formed a stable alternative vision of the future to measure our decision-making against.
This course began as an exercise I designed for my own use. After a decade of leading and coaching change in public health, the ambitious plans I had for 2020 were flipped on their head by the arrival of multiple high impact, high uncertainty events that required me to rapidly reorient how I was thinking about the future, and find a way to make decisions about work while holding multiple possible futures in my mind.
After completing this course, you will be able to:
Clearly describe what you need from a new role
Assess how a job meets your needs in four different possible futures
Recognise the right job for right now
Say yes to an offer with greater confidence and less anxiety
Feel more grounded and less stuck
Take it fast or slow, and return anytime
